SPRING FEVER

I have never looked forward to spring as much as I have this year. Here in Southern California, the warmer afternoons are already appearing regularly. We are starting to eat lunch outside on Sundays, a ritual we cherished last summer to beat the Covid blues.

But my restlessness and yearning and longing that comes with spring fever has everything to do with the idea that, because I am vaccinated, I can finally plan to see my kids and grandkids again in person – at the same table. I can get out from behind my laptop screen and cradle my latest grandchild in my arms and coo at him closely for the first time. I can say yes to all the visits that are coming up with my sisters without question. I can get rid of the pencil, and ink in activities, big and small on my planner that are more creative than “walk at 2:00.”

Of course, we remain cautious, and continue to mask and distance, when required and wash, and wash and wash our hands. But I feel safer and hopeful and frankly, a little giddy.
